A suspected robber was killed in a mob attack at Dakhshin Bhangamor Jugipara village in Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha district early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Hafizar Rahman, 38, resident of Chakmamrojpur village in Sadar upazila.
Jahangir Alam, chairman of Damodarpur Union (UP), confirmed the matter.
Quoting locals, police said that Hafizar along with his two associates came to the village riding on a pickup van around 2am to allegedly commit robbery.
At first, they entered the house of one Rafiqul Islam. They looted valuables from his house as Rafiqul along with his wife was staying at his in-law's house.
Then, the gang entered the house of adjoining Nuru Miah and stole three cattle.
At one stage, the villagers sensed the presence of the robber gang and started chasing them as the robbers went to an empty land along with the robbed valuables, and cattle.
Though, two gang members managed to flee the scene with the pickup van, Hafizar was detained by the local villagers.
Later he was brought to the local Nuru's house and locked in a room and the police and local chairman were informed.
At that time, the angry villagers broke the fence and door of the house, dragged Hafizar out, and started beating him up.
At one stage, Hafizar became seriously ill.
After receiving the information, the police took him to the hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.
Meanwhile, three villagers were injured after being hit by their pickup van while two other gang members were fleeing the scene being chased by locals.
In this regard, Sadullapur Police Station Officer-In-Charge (OC) Enayet Hossain said that the body of the youth, who was beaten to death during the robbery incident, has been brought to upazila health complex.
The process of sending the body to the Gaibandha District Hospital morgue for autopsy is underway.
