Tourists visiting Cox's Bazar now will come across a unique, 38-foot long and 14-foot wide monster made out of plastic waste, illustrating how plastic pollution has reached such an alarming level.

Bidyanondo Foundation, a voluntary organization made the sculpture out of plastic waste with the help of the district administration and the tourist police.

According to the organizers, this is a unique initiative to create awareness about plastic pollution among tourists and locals visiting the world's longest beach.

The sculpture will be available for public display till December 21.

Akram Hossain, chief volunteer coordinator of Bidyanondo Foundation said: “Tens of thousands of tourists visit Cox's Bazar and St Martin's Island, leaving behind plastic waste on the beach and in the water.”

“Marine and human life are in great danger due to the alarming increase in pollution. Hence, Bidyanondo Foundation took this innovative step to create awareness.”

He also noted that volunteers collected some 1,000 bags of plastic waste from the beaches in Cox's Bazar, Teknaf, and St Martin's Island over the course of two months.

The original project, a plastic monster, was created by a team of artists from Dhaka University's Department of Fine Arts.

This plastic monster is the tallest in Asia, according to the sculptors.

Nadira Kanon, a tourist from Dhaka said: “It's great to see such an initiative taken in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar as we should all be aware to stop the plastic monster. We have to make people see that plastic waste is actually wreaking havoc on the oceans.”
