December 3 is a red letter day in the history of Thakurgaon as it was liberated from the clutches of the Pakistan occupation army through a valiant fight on that day in 1971.

The day is being observed with various programs in the district on Saturday.

The victorious freedom fighters jointly with the Indian allied forces bravely liberated Thakurgaon town from the Pakistani occupation army, bringing freedom to the local people on this day in 1971.

To mark the day, the district units of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad and Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Gosthi have jointly taken up different programs.

According to local freedom fighters and elderly citizens of Thakurgaon, the occupation forces failed to enter Thakurgaon town till April 14, 1971, following stiff resistance from freedom fighters.

Thakurgaon was under Sector No 6 during the War of Liberation under the command of sector commander squadron leader M Khademul Bashar.

Under Sector no 6, the brave freedom fighters with the help of the allied forces captured Panchagarh thana on November 29. So the Pakistani enemy started to move back. They left Panchagarh and moved back to Maidandighi then Boda and later to Bhulli under Thakurgaon thana.

The Pakistani forces bombed and blew up the Bhulli bridge and severed communication so that the brave freedom fighters could not come there. The freedom fighters reached the other side of the bridge on the night of December 1. There was a night-long battle.

The battle lasted all day on December 2. Then the Pakistan army troops fled and took position in Thakurgaon city.

When the freedom fighters crossed Bhulli towards Thakurgaon city with the help of the allies, they saw landmines on the road. On December 2, the Pakistani forces fled the city of Thakurgaon as the freedom fighters started to move forward clearing mines and advancing with a heavy attack.

In the morning of December 3, 1971 a big contingent of freedom fighters and allied forces coming from Tetulia (Tetulia was a liberated area throughout the Liberation War period) entered Thakurgaon town in a victorious mood.

Then they hoisted the national flag of Bangladesh at Thakurgaon thana.
