Students' Parishad and Women's Parishad of Rangamati district committee of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) have formed a human chain demanding amendment of clauses that are inconsistent and discriminatory with the constitution of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) agreement.
They formed the human chain on the occasion of the historic CHT agreement's 25th anniversary.
The speakers said in the human chain organized in front of the Rangamati district commissioner's office on Thursday morning that before the implementation of the peace agreement it was said that the agreement was an aspiration to establish peace in the hills.
However, in that agreement some clauses have been added which are in conflict with the constitution of Bangladesh and many existing laws which are also discriminatory and communal, they said.
A petition was filed in the High Court challenging various clauses of the peace agreement. In the writ judgment, the High Court cancelled many clauses of the peace agreement as unconstitutional.
They said that for the full implementation of the agreement, a total of 38 laws including 26 national laws and 12 specific laws related to Chittagong Hill Tracts need to be amended.
If the government wants, we are ready to give specific proposals to the government to ensure the rights of all communities to establish permanent peace in the hilly areas, said the leaders of Student's Parishad and Women's Parishad.
Md Habib Azam, Rangamati district president of Chittagong Hill Tracts Students Parishad, presided over the human chain.
On December 2, 1997, the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the government of Bangladesh signed this historic agreement in an effort to find a political solution to the Chittagong Hill Tracts issue.
