Update : 26 Nov 2022, 12:11 AM

An indefinite transport strike enforced by Sunamganj transport workers union that went underway on Thursday evening was called off 24 hours later by the association on Friday.

The decision came following a meeting by Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Md Jahangir Hossain and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ehsan Shah along with representatives from bus owners and workers on Friday afternoon.

The police had seized three buses that were parked on a road as there was no space in the terminal on Thursday. Later, the association called the indefinite strike in the evening.

Serajul Karim, the president of district workers' union, said that the police agreed to release the seized buses and agreed not to take action again before the district bus terminal is renovated.

Earlier, no long-distance buses left the district since Thursday night due to the strike called to press home the demand for renovation of Sunamganj bus terminal and protesting alleged police harassment.

Bus services were suspended on 10 routes to and from Sunamganj causing immense suffering for the commuters arriving at the terminal to travel to adjacent areas.

Meanwhile, bus workers reportedly obstructed all types of vehicular movement on the Mallkpur area of the district.

Earlier, a two-day strike was observed in Sunamganj ahead of BNP's divisional rally on November 19.
