In connection with the altercation between BNP men and police in Rangpur on Wednesday, police have filed cases against district BNP President Saiful Islam, General Secretary Anisur Rahman Laku, and 300 unidentified leaders and activists in Rangpur's Metropolitan Kotwali police station.

A number of accusations have been made, including attacking police and hurting three officers, as well as hindering government operations.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Inspector (Investigation) Hossain Ali confirmed the matter, adding that the case was filed by SI Rafiqul Islam.

The primary defendant in the case, Saiful Islam, the district BNP president, asserted that he was not in Rangpur on Tuesday.

He pointedly said that he had video footage and other documentary evidence of his stay in Dhaka which he will present in court.

When contacted on his official mobile phone on Wednesday afternoon, Police Inspector (Investigation) Hossain Ali said that a case has been filed against BNP leaders and activists. SI Rafiqul Islam has been made plaintiff in the case and SI Sohail Rana has been given the responsibility of investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Saiful Islam and Anisur Rahman Laku requested immediate withdrawal of the case and not to harass the leaders and activists.

Earlier on Tuesday, 20 BNP leaders and activists including three policemen were injured in a clash between police and BNP men in Rangpur.

Three of them have been admitted to different hospitals.

The clash took place near the BNP office at the Grand Hotel intersection of the city.

BNP leaders alleged that when they were protesting the killing of Chhatra Dal leader Nayon Miah in Brahmanbaria, police attacked them.
