Power cut in Ashrayan project due to outstanding power bill in Tangail

Workers are fearing theft of construction project materials due to lack of electricity

Update : 16 Nov 2022, 08:15 PM

The Rural Electricity Authority has cut the electricity connection to the Prime Minister's Ashrayan Project due to outstanding electricity bills in Tangail's Basail on Wednesday.

It has been alleged that the electricity has been cut suddenly without giving any notice.

Meanwhile, workers are fearing theft of construction project materials due to lack of electricity.

According to the office of the upazila project implementation officer: “The work of 30 houses of the PM Sheikh Hasina's Ashrayan Project began in July this year. The cost of each house has been estimated Tk2,59,500. The construction of the house is nearing completion.”

Sakhawat Hossain, the upazila project implementation officer, said that the electricity was disconnected without giving any notice. This has stopped the work of the project.

Anjan Kumar Sarkar, GGM of Basail rural electricity authority, said in this regard: “Due to four months' worth of unpaid electrical bills, the electricity has been cut off. If the electricity bill is past due, a message will be delivered via a government system. Since the electrical connection was obtained in July, the authorities had not paid the associated electricity bill.”

In answer to a query, he stated that if the electricity bill is unpaid for three months, the ministry is mandated to cut off the power.

However, he said that he had talked to UNO to resolve the issue and the UNO has officially promised to give money.

Basail Upazila Executive Officer Papia Akhter could not be reached.
