Lalon devotees in Kushtia on Saturday formed a human chain in front of Lalon Academy in Kumarkhali to protest the attack on a baul gathering in Daulatpur Upazila on November 5.

A group of villagers allegedly attacked the gathering, leaving five bauls injured.

The injured are undergoing treatment at Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, said Mujibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station.

Among the injured are Palash Mandal (30), Palan Mandal (37), Akalima Khatun (40), Majeda Fakirani (50) and Pravin Sadhu Fazal Fakir (70).

The organizers of the human chain said the Lalon devotees are peace-loving people and do not engage in any kind of criminal activities.

They said that the attack on such people is unacceptable and demanded punishment of those involved in the attack.

Local people said Lalon devotee Palan Mandal of Laubaria village organized a two-day event of baul worship at his home on November 5. At around 8:30pm, a group of villagers equipped with homemade weapons attacked the bauls gathered there, the local people claimed.

The attackers beat up the bauls indiscriminately with sharp weapons and sticks before fleeing the scene.

When Palan Mandal tried to stop the attackers, he was beaten up. The injured bauls were admitted to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex.

On November 9, baul Palan Mandal sued 19 people in a case filed with Daulatpur Police Station the next day.

Mujibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station, said that legal action will be taken after investigation into the incident.
