The body of a passenger who died after a boat capsized in the Karatoa River in Boda upazila of Panchagarh in September has been recovered after 45 days of the incident.
The deceased is Bhupendranath Roy Paniya, 42, son of Madan Roy of Chatra Shikarpur Hatiduba village of Shaldanga union of Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh district.
So far, 70 bodies have been recovered in this incident while two are still missing.
Chairman of Madea union parishad Abu Anshar Md Rezaul Karim Shamim said: “On Wednesday afternoon, locals found the partially decayed body of a local resident while lifting pebbles from the bottom of the river at the boat sinking site of the Aulia Ghat area of Karatoa River.”
“Later, they informed us along with the families of the missing person. The family confirmed that the body was of Bhupendranath after seeing the clothes he was wearing. The body has been handed over to the family,” he added.
Bhupendranath's son Deepan said: “My father and mother Rupali Rani went to the Mahalaya ceremony on a boat with my younger brother Dipu. Luckily, Dipu survived. My mother's body was found earlier but my father's body was found after 45 days.”
Boda police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sujoy Kumar Roy said the family members confirmed that the body was indeed Bhupendranath's.
On September 25, an engine boat carrying over 100 Hindu devotees, heading for a temple on the other side of the Karatoa River to perform Mahalaya rituals, sank near Aulia Ghat under Mareya union of Boda upazila in Panchagarh.
