Three days after going missing in Chittagong, a 7-year-old girl's body was found inside a bag from a drain.
She was killed after rape, said the police.
Meanwhile, police on early Friday arrested the alleged rapist, Laxman Das, 30. He is an employee of a shop.
Deputy Commissioner (south zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Md Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the information at a press conference at his office.
According to the officer, the missing 7-year-old left her home to buy chips in the Jamalkhan Lichu Bagan neighborhood on October 24 at around 4:30pm.
After extensive searching, a missing person's diary report was filed at the Kotwali police station.
Police gathered CCTV footage from the area and launched an investigation.
Police located her body in a drain behind the Shikdar Hotel after receiving information from the National Emergency Service on Thursday.
Later, Jharna Begum, the minor's mother, filed a murder case at Kotwali police station.
To look into the incident and apprehend those responsible, many police teams were organized.
According to the police officer, the bag containing the body that was found in the drain had the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) brand's logo.
Hence, police initiated an inquiry centered on that .
In the meantime, a store called "Shyamal Store" was where an empty bag with a TCB seal was found. Consequently, authorities obtained data on the shop's proprietor, every employee, and surveillance footage of the neighborhood.
Laxman Das, an employee of that shop, was identified as the killer after examining all of the available evidence, said the officer.
Md Mostafizur Rahman further said that after extended interrogation following his arrest, he confessed to killing the child.
Laxman said that on the day of the incident, at 4:43pm, the child was tempted to with a Tk100 note and was taken to the store room. She was raped in that room.
Later, when the child started bleeding, Laxman got scared and suffocated the minor to death.
