Intern doctors of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) returned to work Sunday afternoon suspending their 72-hour abstention from work called on Saturday.
Imran Hossain, president of RMCH intern doctor council, announced the fresh strike at a human chain in front of the hospital Saturday afternoon.
He said that they returned to work on Sunday afternoon due to the suffering of the patients.
RMCH Director Brigadier General Shameem Yazdany said: “It is very difficult to run a hospital without an intern doctor. If they do not return to work, medical care will collapse.”
Dhaka TribuneHe said that during the strike, senior doctors continued to provide medical services in their respective wards. As a result, the suffering of the patients had been reduced to some extent. “The interns are back to work, now the hospital's medical services are back to normal,” he added.
On Wednesday night, a Rajshahi University student died after falling from the third floor of Shahid Habibur Rahman Hall. He died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).
Dhaka TribuneThe agitated students ransacked the hospital, alleging negligence on the part of the doctors. Later, students vandalized the hospital grounds while being chased by police inside the facility.
The aggrieved students demanded that the officials of RMCH be identified and immediate action to be taken against them.
At one point, the agitated RU students clashed with the interns of RMCH.
Dhaka TribuneIn this incident, the university and hospital authorities filed two separate cases. Again, RU students and RMCH intern doctors held separate protests on Sunday for various demands including the arrest of those involved in the incident.
