Teen dies watching football as makeshift pavilion collapses

Fifteen people received injuries

A youth died and fifteen others received injuries after a tin-shed roof collapsed on Friday during a football match in Joypurhat.

The deceased was known as Khorshed Hossain, 18, son of Khalilur Rahman, hailed from Rampura Ranipukur village of Khetlal upazila.

There was a football match between the team of Barrister Sumon Football Academy and Panchbibi Radhanagar Khelawar Kallan Samity held at Sheikh Russel Mini stadium this afternoon, said Joypurhat Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Noor A Alam.

Some spectators took up positions on top of a tin-shed roof and branches of a tree adjacent to the football field. The roof at one point collapsed due to the pressure of the spectators, leaving at least sixteen people injured, he added.

Four of the injured, who were in the most critical condition, were taken to Joypurhat district hospital where doctors declared Khorshed dead around 6:30 pm.
