Defending his previous statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said that those who labeled his speech as tantamount to sedition do not understand the Constitution of the country.
He said that the same Constitution has allowed the people to express opinions and has ensured freedom of speech while talking to reporters at his Thakurgaon residence.
At a party rally in Chittagong on Wednesday, Fakhrul said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's administration should also be subject to US sanctions in addition to the sanctions imposed on the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
Alleging that the BNP leaders and activists were harassed while joining the rally in Chittagong, Fakhrul on Friday said that no obstruction would be able to hold-off party movement against the government.
“While trying to create obstacles, they (the government) have turned the country into an undemocratic one and fascist in nature,” he added.
The BNP has the people by its side in its anti-government movement. Fakhrul claimed that all the attempts to restrict party men from joining the Chittagong rally were unsuccessful.
He said even the Jatiya Party top brass now thinks the country is currently under a dictatorship.
Slamming the ruling party’s claim that Bangladesh’s victory in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) polls has proved the allegations brought by the opposition are wrong, Fakhrul said many of those voting for Bangladesh are suffering from a lack of democracy themselves.
Bangladesh secured 160 among 189 casted votes in the polls held for the membership of the UNHRC.
It is a good thing in one sense as the government will now be more accountable when it comes to protecting the human rights of the people, Fakhrul added.
