At least 77 houses were burnt to ashes in a fire in Sreepur of Gazipur.

The fire broke out around 9:30pm on Thursday night in Gazipur’s Maona Uttarpara village.

On information, four firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after two hours of effort.

However, there were no reports of casualties.

Nurul Haque, the owner of the houses, said that the first five houses that caught fire were under construction. Later, the fire quickly spread to the surrounding houses. “Local garment workers used to live in those houses,” he added.

However, he could not tell the source of the fire.

Nilufa Begum, a worker of the Meghna Cycle Factory in Maona Uttarpara village, said: “I was on a roster duty. When I came home, I saw our house on fire. We could not do anything but watch. All our furniture, money and clothes were burnt to ashes in that fire.”

Belal Hossain, the warehouse inspector of Maona Fire Service in Sreepur, said that four firefighting units reached the spot around 9:30pm upon information. After two hours of hefty effort, they managed to control the fire.

However, he couldn’t verify the extent of the damage and cause of the fire.
