Update : 09 Oct 2022, 01:49 PM

At least two Bangladeshi nationals were shot dead along Satkhira and Chadanga borders on Sunday.

In Satkhira, a man was gunned down along the Khaitola border of the district at around 3am.

The incident took place at the border’s main pillar no nine.

The deceased has been identified as Abu Hasan, 27.

Hasan’s father Haydar Ali said he got a call from the locals saying that his son was shot along the border allegedly by Border Security Force (BSF).

Hasan was sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital but was later referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital when his condition deteriorated, he added.

Hasan died at around 7:20am on the way to the hospital.

Saiful Islam, the victim’s father-in-law, said that Hasan used to smuggle stolen goods to and from India on a regular basis.

“He also has five drug cases against him. Even a week ago, he was detained but was later released by the local police,” he added.

Islam also noted that on Saturday night Hasan was at the border area to smuggle goods from India.

In this regard, Commander of Satkhira Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB-33) Lt Col Al Mahmud said that when asked about the incident, BSF denied shooting anyone.

“However, a flag meeting has been called between BGB and BSF. The meeting will be held at the zero line of Kalyani border,” he added.

Meanwhile, in Chuadanga, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot and killed a Bangladeshi man at Boldiya border in Damurhuda upazila of the district, a Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) official said.

The Bangladeshi man, said to be a cattle trader, was identified as Muntaj Hossain alias Jahangir, 32, from Boldiay School Para, reports UNB.

Lt Col Shah Mohammad Istiaq, director of BGB-6 battalion, said that the Indian BSF fired at around 5am when Muntaj went to India to bring cattle through the border, opposite of main pillar no 82, leaving him dead on the spot.

He said the body is still on the Indian side of the border separated by barbed wire fence.

AHM Lutful Kabir, officer-in-charge of Darshana police station, said they were aware of the matter, but have no details.
