Bangladesh women's football team striker Krishna Rani Sarkar visited her village home in Tangail on Thursday, for the first time since her team clinched the Saff championship title on September 19.

She reached her village Uttor Pathalia under Gopalpur Upazila in the afternoon. A warm reception was given to her in the district town where hundreds of people were waiting for her arrival from adjacent areas with flowers.

Krishna played a key role in the Bangladesh team’s 3-1 victory in the final match over Nepal and lifting the maiden Saff championship title, by scoring two goals.

She was away for over two months and the moment of reunion with her family was joyous. She was in tears while embracing her family members one after another. Her fans also got the chance to be a witness of the occasion.

Earlier in the morning, Krishna left Dhaka for Tangail, and as soon as she reached Gopalpur area, her fans and school students welcomed her with flowers.

Krishna's family members said they had missed her but it was worth the wait as she brought the country happiness and glory. They hoped she would continue the good work in the future.

One local fan who came to welcome Krishna to her village home said the player was an asset for the nation and her two goals were critical as Bangladesh’s margin against Nepal was those two goals in the final.

Krishna's mother Namita Rani Sarkar said that Krishna went to Dhaka the day after Eid-ul-Azha. “The local people were also waiting for Krishna for a long time.”

Krishna said she was ecstatic to have been welcomed in such a way. "Everyone is appreciating us. I am happy to come home and meet my parents after a long time…I want the blessing and prayers so that I can play better in the future," she told Dhaka Tribune.

Tangail Deputy Commissioner Ataul Gani said: “The district administration will give a reception to Krishna. Also, we are ready to provide any kind of support to her.”

Krishna was born on January 1, 2001. She first played the game in 2010 at the upazila level Bangmata Fajilatunnesa Mujib inter-primary football tournament.

Her institution, Uttor Pathalia Government Primary School, became the champions under her leadership that year. Soon after this, a local mentor and a teacher at Suti VM Pilot Model Government High School, Golam Raihan Bapan, started training her. She was also admitted to the school and her tution fees were waived.
