A cargo ship has reportedly hit a pillar of Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib Bridge over the Kocha River in Pirojpur Sadar upazila on Monday.
The ship, MV Jaman-2 hit the pillar at around 8:30pm, locals reported.
Several people who were on the bridge also took videos of the incident and posted them on social media.
A witness, Jannatul Ferdous, said he went to visit the bride with his friends when MV Jaman-2 hit a pillar of the bridge. The ship later went towards the Bhandaria-Mathbaria area.
“The collision made a terrifying sound, and scared everyone on the bridge,” he added.
In this regard, Pirojpur Roads and Highways Department engineer Md Waheduzzaman said he would look into the matter and take proper action.
Meanwhile, Pirojpur Sadar Upazila’s Sariktala-Dumritala UP Chairman Ajmir Hossain Majhi said: “I have seen the video of the cargo ship MV Jaman-2 hitting Bangmata Bridge. I demand that the bridge be made more secure by the administration.”
On September 4, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib Bridge over the Kocha River in Pirojpur Sadar upazila.
The prime minister virtually inaugurated the bridge from her office in Dhaka.
The Eighth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge, whose construction work started on November 1, 2018, was opened to traffic on September 5.
The Roads and Highways Department constructed the 998-metre-long and 13.4-metre-wide bridge at a cost of Tk894.08 crore.
The Chinese government provided Tk654.8 crore as project assistance for the bridge, while the Bangladesh side spent Tk239.8 crore.
The bridge is located 185km southwest of Dhaka in Pirojpur.
