10 injured in clash between supporters of GM Quader and Ranga in Rangpur

Mashiur Rahman Ranga’s supporters burned GM Quader’s effigy on Wednesday night

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and its ousted leader MP Mashiur Rahman Ranga in Rangpur.

Mahfuzar Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, said the incident took place near the city’s Life Insurance Corporation office around 11pm on Wednesday.

According to the police, the supporters of GM Quader led by Rangpur City Corporation Mayor and Metropolitan Jatiya Party President Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa took position in the district Jatiya Party office since Wednesday evening fearing that the supporters of Ranga may occupy the office.

The supporters of Ranga burnt GM Quader’s effigy and started raising slogans against him in front of the city’s Life Insurance Corporation office around 11pm.

On information, GM Quader’s supporters came to the spot and attacked Ranga’s supporters. At that time, chase and counter-chase took place between the supporters of the two leaders. At least 10 people were injured in the clash.

Later, a police team led by Kotwali Circle Assistant Commissioner of Police Arifuzzaman and OC Mahfuzar Rahman brought the situation under control.

Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Mustafizar Rahman said: “We wanted peaceful coexistence. The supporters of Ranga deliberately attacked JaPa leaders and activists and injured a few of them.”

In this regard, Ranga supporter Abdul Mannan said several leaders and activists were injured in the incident.

OC Mahfuzar Rahman said police beefed up security across the city.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader relieved the party’s MP Mashiur Rahman Ranga from all posts.
