Industrial pollution is to be blamed for the contamination of water bodies in and around Gazipur, Dr Manjur Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of the National River Conservation Commission (NRCC), has said.
The cost of this pollution will have to be borne by the industries responsible for the current state of water bodies. But the entire country will feel the pinch, Dr Manjur said while inspecting an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) plant of Meghna Knit Composite Limited in Sreepur of Gazipur yesterday.
He said that the commission will never demand the closure of these industries polluting the water bodies; rather, it will suggest that the management of these industries be changed.
He called on everyone to keep the issue of environmental pollution in mind while operating business.
Some unscrupulous people are doing illegal business by dumping waste in water bodies, he said, adding that the law enforcers must bring them to justice.
