Newborns die after hospital authorities stop oxygen supply for bill payments

Police detain four people for questioning

Update : 07 Sep 2022, 12:45 PM

A set of newborn twins died at a clinic in Chittagong on Tuesday after the clinic authorities allegedly took off their oxygen masks due to a delay in bill payment.

The incident took place at Matriseba Normal Delivery Centre in the Jharnapara area of the city.

The police later detained four clinic officials in this connection and sealed off the place.

Autorickshaw driver Monir Hossain, father of the deceased twins, said his wife, Lovely Begum, gave birth to the babies in the clinic at around 2pm on Tuesday.

The clinic authorities had told him to shift his newborns to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and billed him Tk10,000, Monir added. Monir said he had paid them Tk5,000 and wanted to pay the rest later.

“They then took off the babies’ oxygen masks and did not allow us to go to another hospital either… They handed us their dead bodies when I, along with my neighbours, returned to the clinic with the rest of the money”

He claimed his newborn babies had died due to negligence of doctors and nurses of the clinic.

Double Mooring police station OC Sakhawat Hossain said legal action would be taken in this regard after investigation.
