Locals have detained 18 Rohingyas who had fled from Bhasan Char Shelter Project in Noakhali and handed them over to the police.
They were handed over to Companyganj police station on Saturday night, reports Bangla Tribune.
Earlier at 8:30pm on Saturday, the locals detained them from the fenced area of Ward No 3 in Char Elahi Union of Companyganj upazila.
According to the police and local sources, a few men and women along with some children were roaming in the shop area of Alamgir adjacent to the embankment at 8pm.
When the locals got suspicious, they admitted to being Rohingya when questioned.
Later, they were taken to the Char Elahi Union Parishad office. Then they were handed over to the Companyganj police station at 11:30pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj police Sadekur Rahman said: "The Rohingyas fled from Bhasan Char Shelter Project to go to Chittagong and Cox's Bazar Rohingya camps through brokers on Saturday. Legal action will be taken against them as per the instructions of the higher authority.”
