A ready-made garment (RMG) worker from Gazipur died on the factory floor on Tuesday after she was denied sick leave.

The incident was reported from Mondol Intimates Ltd in Gazipur Sadar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Shimu, 25, a sewing operator at the factory.

Other workers of the factory said Shimu asked for leave from the floor in-charge and supervisor of the factory when she fell ill.

However, her request was denied, and she was asked to continue her work.

Later, while working, Shimu collapsed unconscious on the floor.

Her coworkers took her to Kazi Hospital Complex, where the doctors pronounced Shimu dead.

In this regard, the hospital’s doctor Shafiqul Islam said: “Shimu died before she was brought to the hospital. Later her body was sent to her village by an ambulance at around 6:30pm.”

Meanwhile, Joydebpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahtab Uddin said that factory owners did not inform the police of the incident.

“I heard of the death. The body was sent to the woman's village without informing us,” he added.

Shimu’s brother-in-law said factory authorities sent the body with another worker of the factory.

The factory’s human resources department Manager Shamsul Haque Palash said that when Shimu fell ill, she was taken to the local Kazi Hospital Complex. Later she was transferred to  Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
