A constable in a highway police patrol car was killed when a bus ran over it on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur on Sunday morning.
Besides, two others, including an officer in charge (OC) of Gogai Highway police station, were injured in the incident that took place in Boardghar area of Kaliakair upazila.
Victim Monir Hossain, 25, is from Kandapara village in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka, said injured OC Mullah Tutul.
According to police, as part of regular patrolling on the highway, OC Mollah Tutul was going towards Kaliakair with constable Monir.
At that time, when the pick-up carrying them reached the board house area, a bus hit it from behind and ran away.
Constable Monir fell on the road and injured OC Tutul and driver Altaf Hossain were trapped inside.
Later, they were rescued and sent to the hospital.
Constable Monir was taken to Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur due to serious injuries and was declared dead by the doctor in charge upon arrival.
OC Mollah said that the bus could not be identified. “However, an investigation is underway to identify the culprits.”
