Ferry movement on the Shimulia-Majhirkandi route has resumed after eight hours suspension to avert any untoward incident due to strong currents in the Padma River.
The ferry movement resumed at 6am on Monday.
According to the Majhirkandi office of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), the currents on the river started increasing in the evening. At 10pm, the authorities decided to suspend the ferry services.
Meanwhile, more than 400 vehicles, including passenger buses, got stuck in the Majhikandi Ghat area due to the suspension of ferry services.
Passengers, drivers and vehicle workers had to wait for hours in the rain for the resumption of the ferry services.
BIWTC Majhirkandi Ghat Office Assistant Director (Commerce) Salah Uddin said: “Due to strong currents, the ferry service was suspended from 10pm to 6am. We are prioritizing passenger buses and private small cars to cross the river keeping in mid the suffering of the passengers.”
Earlier, a head-on collision between two ferries on the Majhirkandi route in the Padma River led to the death of a man and injuries of at least 10 others.
