Munni Akhter, with her three-year-old daughter Maria, came to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for DNA test - hoping to find her husband Rubel.

The 26-year-old worked at the BM Container Depot at Sitakunda in Chittagong, and has been missing since the fire broke out on Saturday night, Munni said.

“No one can tell me if he was killed in the fire or is still alive,” Munni told Bangla Tribune.

She added: “I came to CMCH after I heard DNA samples were being collected from unidentified bodies or those who could not find their relatives. So my daughter and I are standing in the line to give our samples.”

Meanwhile, another woman, Mohsena Akhter Koli was seen frantically looking for her brother Monir Hossain, 32, who has been missing since the tragic fire.

"My brother got married six months ago," she said, before adding that the couple is expecting a child soon.

She mentioned that she, and her family have been rushing from one hospital to another to find out what happened to Monir.

Their father, Abdul Hannan said: "My son, Monir, has been working in this depot for 10 years. He was the driver there. I haven't been able to find him since the explosion. That's why I came to give DNA samples.”

Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Md Mominur Rahman said: “Among the 49 victims of the fire, 41 bodies were at CMCH. The remaining eight bodies are at different hospitals in the city.”

A forensic team led by Chittagong CID Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jahangir Alam set up a booth in front of the CMCH on Monday to cross-match DNA samples of unidentified victims of the Sitakunda fire.

The massive fire was brought under control after 25 hours, following frantic efforts of firefighters.

Around 25 units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence were reportedly working on the scene, while around 250 members of the Bangladesh Army army joined the rescue operations.

Three probe panels, including a nine-member local administration committee, were formed on Sunday to probe the incident.
