Over 800 BNP activists sued for ‘attacking police’ in Khulna

Update : 27 May 2022, 02:58 PM

A case has been started against more than 800 BNP leaders and activists for attacking officers of Khulna Sadar police station during a clash between Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal.

Khulna Sadar police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Biswajit Kumar Bose filed the case late on Thursday, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hasan Al Mamun told a media call.

A procession was organized by Chhatra Dal, the student of the BNP, in front of the Khulna BNP office at around 3pm on Thursday. An hour later, Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, also held a procession before the Awami League office.

The clash erupted when Chhatra Dal leaders and activists crossed the Picture Palace area in the city and allegedly attacked their Chhatra League counterparts by hurling brickbats.

On-duty police officers tried to bring the situation under control by firing teargas shells and rubber bullets when the skirmish became violent.

At least 14 police officers of Khulna Sadar police station were injured in the incident.

Khulna Metropolitan BNP Member Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin and 37 others were detained from the spot during the clash.

Khulna BNP Convener Shafiqul Alam Monar said police and Chhatra League had launched an attack on BNP members, injuring more than 50 BNP leaders and activists. Despite that they were the ones who had been sued, he added.

Khulna Chhatra League President Parvez Hawlader said the organization had held its procession to protest Chhatra Dal’s “criminal activities” and its general secretary’s “offensive” remarks on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said more than 50 Chhatra League men were undergoing treatment at different area hospitals.
