One killed, 15 injured in clash over dominance in Faridpur

Additional forces deployed to prevent further untoward incidents

A sexagenarian has died and 15 others have sustained injuries in a clash over establishing dominance in the Jadunandi area of Faridpur’s Saltha upazila.

Nannu Fakir, 65, died in the skirmish between supporters of Kaiyum Molla of Jadunandi and Rupapat Union Parishad Chairman Mizanur Rahman Sona Mia late on Wednesday.

Police rushed to the spot upon receiving the news of the clash and managed to bring the situation under control.

According to locals, Kaiyum, president of the local Bamonkanda High School’s managing committee, and Mizanur have been engaged in a turf war for some time.

Mizanur’s men beat up Monir, a supporter of Kaiyum, a couple of days ago and a tenth-grader at Bamonkanda High School, Mehedi, on Wednesday afternoon.

Soon a clash ensued, which left Nannu seriously injured. He was later pronounced dead on arrival at Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex.

It was not immediately clear if he had been a follower of either men or just a bystander.

Additional forces were deployed in the area to prevent further untoward incidents.

Dhaka Tribune could not reach Kaiyum or Mizanur for comment.

The situation in the area is normal now, said Faridpur Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Suminur Rahman.
