A Chittagong court on Wednesday sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for murdering college student Mamunur Rashid Mamun in 2018.
AKM Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, judge of Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Chittagong, delivered the verdict.
The convicts are– Md Azam, 26, Md Faruk alias Ashik, 26, Ali Azgor, 20, Md Omar Uddin, 24, Showkat Hossain, 22, SM Asharaful Alam Suman, 22 and Md Parvaj, 25, all hailing from Shah Mirpur village under Karnaphuli Upazila of the district.
The court also fined each Tk50,000, in default of which, they will spend one more year in jail.
According to the prosecution, the convicts chopped Mamunur Rashid alias Sagor and Md Aziz over previous enmity on September 26, 2018 at Shah Mirpur village under Karnaphuli Upazila. Local people brought them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared Mamunur dead.
The victim's younger brother Md Yasin filed a murder case with Karnaphuli police station on September 27 in 2018.
Police submitted a charge sheet on March 11, 2019 against the convicts while the court framed charges against them on January 5, 2021.
The court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday after examining 18 prosecution witnesses out of 27.
