A Bogra couple ended their lives hours after eloping, as the girl’s family refused to accept their marriage, say police.
On Monday, the couple- college student Marzia Jannat, 19, drank poison during an argument with Sabuj Mia, 21, over the phone, regarding Marzia’s family’s refusal to accept their marriage.
Later, Sabuj reportedly hanged himself in his house after sensing Marzia was dead.
The incident was reported from Shibganj upazila’s Majhihatta union.
Shibganj police have sent the bodies to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College for autopsy. An unnatural death case has been filed in this connection.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dipak Kumar said Marzia and Sabuj had eloped twice.
“Six months ago, the couple eloped, but Marzia’s family forced them into getting a divorce. Two days ago, Marzia's family forced her to get married to an expatriate, which is why the couple decided to elope again on Monday,” he added.
