The body of an elderly man in Manikganj had to be sent to the morgue after his son appeared during the burial after a long gap and demanded an autopsy, claiming that his brothers had killed his father.

Jalal Uddin, 70, of Sribari village under Ghior Upazila of Manikganj got severely injured being hit by an auto-rickshaw and died at a hospital on Thursday.

A retired employee of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Jalal Uddin had four sons and two daughters.

According to locals, when the family and relatives were preparing to bury the body, Jalal’s son Nurul Islam appeared suddenly and stooped the funeral.

Nurul called 999 and claimed that his father had been killed by his three brothers.

After receiving the call, Ghior police members went to the spot and found out about the death in the accident, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Riazuddin Ahmed Biplob.

The villagers, including the local chairman and members, confirmed his death in the accident and requested Nurul to allow them to bury the body. But he did not agree.

According to family members and locals, Nurul left his home many years ago and used to come back occasionally and threaten his brothers his rights on his father’s properties.

Tara Mia, the eldest son of Jalal, said his brother was a vagabond and a drug addict. His wife and children also left him.

“Nobody knows where he lives, and he also does not contact his family members. But for a long time, he has been claiming the inheritance of his father's property,” Tara Mia said.

He has harassed many people including the chairman and members of the Union Parishad by making false allegations to the law enforcement agencies.

A year ago, the father filed a general diary against him with the local police.

Police sent the body to Manikganj Sadar Hospital for an autopsy as per Nurul’s request, said the OC.
