A man was stabbed to death and his brother injured in an attack launched when they were returning home after a court hearing in Pabna on Monday.

The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Al Amin, an employee of Sujanagar municipality. The injured is Al Amin’s brother Rajab Ali.

Rajab is a member of the municipal unit Awami League and was working as a vaccinator.

The incident took place in broad daylight at Sadullapur village of Sadar Upazila in the afternoon, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin of Ataikula police station.

According to police and eyewitnesses, former mayor of Sujanagar municipality Tofazzal Hossain Tofa and his brother Jewel Rana, secretary of the municipal unit Juba League, had a long-running dispute with Al Amin and Rajab Ali over a piece of land.

Earlier, Al Amin and Rajab filed a case against Tofazzal and Jewel over beating and torturing them, said Sujanagar Upazila Juba League President Sardar Raju Ahmed.

Al Amin and Rajab were returning home after hearing the case in Pabna court when a group of youths led by Tofa and Jewel attacked them in front of Sadullapur school.

The assailants hacked Al Amin and Rajab with sharp weapons and escaped.

Locals rescued them in critical condition and admitted them to Pabna General Hospital where Al Amin succumbed to his injuries, said the OC.

Rajab Ali was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition, he said.

Tofazzal and Jewel Rana have been absconding since the incident.

“Al Amin was killed in public as he filed the case. We want justice for this incident,” Sardar Raju said.

Police said they were trying to arrest the culprits involved in the incident.
