Former UP chairman among two detained in war crimes case in Satkhira

There are allegations of rape and murder against the arrestees

Police have arrested two persons including a former upazila chairman in a case filed for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War in Satkhira.

The arrestees are Abul Hashem, 72, a former chairman of Budhhata Union Parishad under Assasuni Upazila, and Mujibur Rahman, 75, a resident of Chapra village of the same union. 

The duo was arrested from Chapra area of Assasuni on Sunday after a court issued arrest warrants against them in a case.  

The duo was sent to Dhaka following their arrests. 

According to Freedom Fighter Alauddin Sana, there are allegations of rape and murder against the arrestees, and therefore, he filed a case in this regard with a Satkhira court on December 7, 2017. 

The court later advised him to file a case with the International Crimes Tribunal.

One of the accused, Liakat Commander, died in 2021. He was, therefore, exonerated from the case.
