A 65-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a four-year-old girl in Tangail on Sunday.
The incident took place in the Kalihati Upazila of the district, said investigating officer of the case, sub-inspector (SI) Sumi.
The accused was identified as Idris Ali Mandal,
The girl went to play in front of Idris’ house on Thursday, when he lured her away with a chocolate and attempted to rape her, said the police official.
But Idris let the toddler go when she started screaming, she said.
Later, the child went home and informed her parents of the incident.
Later, villagers organized an arbitration and fined the man Tk1 lakh for his crime. The man was also handed down a light punishment of doing 10 sit-ups with a shoe in his mouth.
Unhappy with the punishment, the father of the child went to Kalihati police station and lodged a complaint.
Idris was sent to jail through the court on Monday, said Sumi.
