A lion has died at the Dulhazra Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Cox’s Bazar.
The 22-year-old lion, named Sohel, died after suffering from old-age complications on Wednesday, Dulhazra Safari Park In-Charge Md Majharul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.
Sohel’s carcass was recovered from the lion’s enclosure at around 4:30pm where he used to live with his partner Nodi and cubs Samrat and Tumpa.
He was buried in the park grounds at night after Chakaria Upazila Livestock Officer (Veterinary Surgeon) Supan Nandi and Park Veterinary Surgeon Dr Hatem Sajjad Md Zulkar Nain conducted an autopsy.
A case has been filed with Chakaria police over the death.
Sohel was brought to the safari park in 2004 from the National Zoo when he was four, park in-charge Majharul Islam said, adding that the lion had been suffering from old age complications for the last four years.
Sohel was treated in 2019 and 2020 by some professors of Chittagong Veterinary Animal Science University when he fell ill.
Lions usually live for 16-18 years and Sohel was already 22, said the park in-charge.
