Police in Khulna are investigating after two-month-old twins were found dead and floating in a pond at a village in the southwestern district.
The incident was reported from the Kushla union in Terkhada Upazila on Friday.
The twin sisters, Moni and Mukta, were found dead around 6.30am, more than four hours after they went missing from their mother’s bedroom, police said quoting locals.
“The behaviour of the family members is suspicious. They were just two months and 11 days old. It’s not that they had gone there themselves. We are investigating the matter,” said OC Md Zahurul Alam of the Terkhada police station.
The mother, Kaniz Fatema Kona has been living at her father’s house with her twin babies since their birth, he said. “The house is owned by one Khayer Sheikh. The children’s father Masum Billah was at his hometown in Bagerhat’s Mollahat upazila when the incident happened,” added the police officer.
Locals said that around 2am on Friday, Kona found that her children were missing. After a frantic search for more than four hours, the babies were found dead and floating in the nearby pond, when the police was informed.
Inspector Md Masum Kazi of the Terkhada police said that Kona moved to her father’s home when she was pregnant with the twins.
“There were some issues among the husband and wife. Kona put the children to sleep around 2am and 30 minutes later, she realized that the babies were missing. The bedroom door was not locked. They were found dead later. The children’s grandmother and uncle recovered the bodies from the pond. We are questioning the family members,” he said.
