Gazipur sexagenarian murder mystery cracked after one and half years

Police Bureau of Investigation arrests two over the 2020 killing

Update : 18 Feb 2022, 01:19 PM

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested two persons in connection with the killing of a sexagenarian in Gazipur, solving the mystery behind the murder after one and a half years.

Mamunur Rashid, 38, and his acquaintance Al Amin, 26, killed and stole from 60-year-old Sahera Begum on August 24, 2020, said Superintendent of Police (SP) of Gazipur PBI Md Maksudur Rahman on Thursday.

According to Maksudur, Sahera’s son, Babul, and his wife have been living in Saudi Arabia for some time.

It was the jewellery and money he sent home that tempted Al Amin, son of Sahera’s house help, Farida Begum.

Sahera used to live with her three-year-old granddaughter, Sara Moni. On the night of August 24, 2020, Al Amin and Mamunur went to Sahera’s home to steal from her. Mamunur asked Sahera to open the door to her house saying that her son had called from Saudi Arabia. Al Amin was on lookout duty.

Mamunur then entered the house, strangled Sahera with a towel and let her fall face-first. She died on the spot after bleeding from her nose and mouth.

The two then locked the main entrance of the house from the outside and left the place after stealing the valuables, said the SP.

The next day Babul phoned his mother’s neighbours to check in on her after being unable to reach her by phone.

They forced their way into Sahera’s house, finding her body in a pool of blood, while her granddaughter was crying in a corner.

Sahera’s daughter, Parvin Akter, filed a case in this connection at Basan police station accusing unnamed persons.

“Basan police investigated the case for around a year but were unable to uncover the mystery. The PBI was then tasked with probing into the incident and Inspector SM Shakil of the PBI started his investigation on June 9 last year, eventually leading to the arrest of Al Amin and Mamunur,” said SP Maksudur.

The two have given confessional statements to a magistrate admitting to their involvement in the incident, he added.
