Three consultants appointed to probe into animal deaths at Gazipur safari park

At least 11 zebras, a tiger and a lioness died at the park in the span of a month

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has appointed three consultants to probe into the recent deaths of several animals at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur.

They are Central Veterinary Hospital Director Shafiul Ahad Sarkar, Dhaka Central Disease Investigation Laboratory official Sukesh Chandra Vaidya and Bangladesh National Zoo official Nazmul Hoda.

Dr Amitabh Chakrabarti, deputy secretary to the ministry, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.

“The three are not members of any probe committees. They will assist the probe body formed by the ministry in its investigation and give advice on treatment of animals,” he said.

The head of the probe committee, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry Additional Secretary Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, said the consultants have already started helping the panel with its investigation. 

At least 11 zebras, a tiger and a lioness died at the park between January 2 and February 3, leading to concerns about animal safety there.
