Northern Bangladesh shivers as mercury dips to 6.1°C in Kurigram

Cold snap hits several parts of the country with the Met Office predicting it to continue and spread during the next two days

Update : 28 Jan 2022, 10:34 PM

Winter has intensified its cold grip on Bangladesh, especially the northern region, with a moderate to mild cold wave sweeping over the country.

The lowest temperature in the country on Friday was recorded at a cool 6.1°C in Rajarhat Upazila of Kurigram.

People are also feeling chilly due to the increase in humidity and wind speed, and Meteorologist Tofajjol Hossain said the cold spell may persist for a few more days.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) in its evening bulletin said weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country. Moderate to thick fog may occur at places over the river basins and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country from midnight to morning, it added.

Mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and the districts of Gopalgonj, Tangail, Mymensingh, Moulvibazar, Jessore and Kushtia and it may continue and spread, it further said.

Nighttime temperatures may fall by 1-2°C and day temperatures may fall slightly, according to the weather department.

It said the ridge of sub-continental high extends up to West Bengal and adjoining the northwestern part of Bangladesh. Seasonal low lies over the South Bay.

Meanwhile, the bleak weather has brought people’s lives to a standstill.

Chhaya Adhikari, a resident of Dinajpur’s Rajbari area, said the cold, coupled with the wind, feels like “icy pricks” on the skin.

Rafikul Islam, an autorickshaw driver of the same area, said daily wage earners are the worst sufferers in winter. “I left home in the morning but have been unable to find passengers,” he said.
