A tribunal has issued arrest warrants against Bandarban Municipality Mayor Mohammad Islam Baby and three others in a case filed for torturing a woman and vandalism to grab a piece of land.
Mayor Mohammad Islam is also the general secretary of the district unit Awami League.
Judge Mohammad Saifur Rahman Siddique of Bandarban Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal issued the order on Monday, after accepting a police report in the case, reports Bangla Tribune.
The three others are mayor’s personal secretary Ashutosh Dey, also the organizing secretary of the municipal unit Jubo League, mayor’s younger brother Nasir Uddin, and former army personnel Sheikh Farid Uddin.
A woman filed the case on June 18 last year against seven people including the mayor for physically torturing her and vandalizing her house in Banani Saw Mill area.
The plaintiff said that the mayor had tried to grab her land using his men, claiming himself to be the owner.
Tourist Police recently submitted a report after completing the investigation, stating that the four were involved in the attack.
