The former president of the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh, (Atab) SN Manzoor Murshed Mahbub, has blamed some officials of the association for an abnormal rise in airfare to different Middle Eastern destinations.
He also blamed a lack of government monitoring in this regard while speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club on Thursday.
Manzoor Murshed also urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take steps in bringing the airfare down to a logical level.
He said that a syndicate in Atab had been creating an artificial crisis of tickets which was responsible for the increase in prices.
When contacted, the current president of the association, Monsur Ahmed Kalam, said that his office would take action against anyone involved with such a syndicate.
Flights on Middle Eastern routes from Bangladesh have become costlier in recent months and expatriates intending to leave the country for various Middle Eastern destinations have been calling on the authorities to check ticket prices for the past few months.
