The low-lying areas of Netrakona and Sunamganj district submerged in flood water as the water level of Someshwari, Surma and Puraton Surma rivers have risen above the danger marks at some points.
Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said that in the next 24 hours, Teesta river water may exceed the danger level.
There is fear of a short-term flood situation in some areas of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts, according to FFWC.
FFWC official Partha Pratim Barua said that if the rains do not increase as per forecast, the flood situation in these areas will improve in the next 48 hours.
However, if the rain increases, some other areas may be submerged, he said.
The River Teesta may cross its danger mark in the next 24 hours at Dalia point in Nilphamari due to continuous rise in water level amid monsoon rains and onrush of water from the upstream.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar may rise rapidly due to a chance of heavy rainfall in the upstream of the Brahmaputra basin in the next 48 hours, reports BSS.
“The Teesta may cross its danger mark at Dalia point in the next 24 hours causing a short-term flood situation in low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts in the basin,” a bulletin issued by the FFWC of BWDB said on Monday
The Teesta was flowing only 7cm below its danger mark at Dalia point in Nilphamari and 92cm below danger mark at Kawnia point in Rangpur at 9am.
The recorded rainfalls during the last 24 hours ending at 9am on Monday were 58mm at Dalia, 52mm at Kawnia, 102mm at Gaibandha, 60.30mm at Sirajganj, 54mm at Jamalpur and 20mm at Rangpur points in the Brahmaputra basin.
“Besides, the recorded rainfalls during the period were 57mm at Shillong and 56mm at Jalpaiguri points of the northwestern Indian states in the upstream during the period,” the bulletin said.
The Dudhkumar was flowing below danger mark by 117cm at Pateshwari, Dharla by 137cm below danger mark at Kurigram and Brahmaputra was flowing below its DM by 162cm at Noonkhawa, 134cm at Hatia and 156cm at Chilmari points respectively at 9am.
The Jamuna was flowing below DM by 165cm at Fulchhari, 161cm at Shaghata, 164cm at Bahadurabad, 176cm at Sariakandi, 199cm at Kazipur and 152cm at Sirajganj points at 9am.
Local BWDB sources said a short-term flood situation is being created in low-lying areas of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur districts alongside the Teesta following monsoon rains and onrush of water from the upstream during the past few days.
Superintending Engineer for Rangpur Circle of BWDB Engineer Md Ahsan Habib said early preparedness has been taken to face any situation during possible flood anywhere in Rangpur division under BWDB's Rangpur zone.
The Deputy Commissioners, Upazila Nirbahi Officers, BWDB authorities, local monitoring committees and public representatives are closely observing the situation in the flood-prone districts.
“Currently, all 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage Project are remaining opened at Dalia point in Nilphamari where the river was flowing below its danger mark by 7cm below danger mark at 9am and 10cm at 12pm on Monday” he said.
Divisional Commissioner Md Habibur Rahman said he directed the district administrations and BWDB to closely monitor the developing situation and take instant steps when and where necessary.
“The district administrations have taken preparations and necessary steps in advance to keep relief goods ready at upazila levels and conduct rescue and relief operations during and post flood periods in affected areas to face the flood situation,” he added.
