The police detained 12 leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir after they took out a sudden procession in Joypurhat Sadar upazila on Saturday.
The detainees are Alam Dewan, 45, Nahidul Islam, 30, Shahidul Islam, 55, Aminul Islam 50, Shipon, 26, and Nur Nabi, 24, of Jamaat, and Asadul Islam, 28, Mamunur Rashid, 27, Maruf Hossain, 16, Mehedi Hasan, 20, Meshkat Sharif, 23, and Sohrab Ali, 22, of Shibir.
Joypurhat Detective Branch OC Shahed Al Mamun said the Jamaat-Shibir men used a cocktail when they became aware of police presence in the area.
The police had fired blanks to bring the situation under control, he added.
