A fierce clash between the players and supporters of two football teams left at least 15 people, including the referee, injured in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred during the semi-final match of an eight-team football tournament on the Beleswar Rupali Welfare Association field in Gazna union of the upazila.

Police went to the spot and calmed the situation after receiving news of the clash, Officer-in-Charge of Madhukhali police station Shahidul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.

He added that no one had filed a written complaint in this regard.

Gazna Union Parishad Chairman Golam Kibria also acknowledged the incident.

According to witnesses, the match between Kamaldia Football XI of Madhukhali and Sultanpur Football XI of Rajbari started at 4:30pm. In the second half of the game, Kamaldia players first attacked the referee, Utpal Bhowmik, after he called a foul. It soon turned into a fight.

The referee said he came under attack after calling a foul against Kamaldia Football XI as per the rules. “Locals rescued me and took me to a nearby house. The clashes began after that,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
