At least 9 injured in Chittagong College Chhatra League clash

An eyewitness said that tensions have been high between the two groups for the past few days

At least nine students were injured during a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Chittagong College unit. 

The supporters of the BCL President Mahmudul Karim and General Secretary Subhash Mallik Sabuj clashed around 12pm on Tuesday.

Chawkbazar Police OC Manjur Quader Majumder confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune. 

Among the nine injured, six were Identified as Safayet Hossain Rajul, Hamim Rafsan, Jahedul Avi, Wahidul Rahman Sujan, Ziauddin Ahmed, and Alif Jabed.

Police said that the two groups engaged in a clash over establishing supremacy. 

“The situation is now under control,” he said. 

A witness requesting anonymity said that the two groups, comprising mostly of 12th graders had been fighting for the last few days. 

He said that tensions were high among the groups as another student was injured in an attack led by the general secretary on Monday. 

Responding to queries on the matter, Mahmudul Karim said: “The college general secretary and his followers attacked the common students and my juniors. During their attack on Monday, a student was also injured.”

He claimed that Sabuj’s faction was trying to push the college students to join Councilor Tinu's group. 

“They attacked us because we ignored them. The attack injured at least six of us,” he said. 

Meanwhile, Chhatra League General Secretary Subhash Mallik Sabuj denied the president's allegations and accused his supporters of attacking him.

“President Mahmudul's people attacked my followers on campus. The attack left three people injured,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
