The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested a fugitive murder convict who had been on the run for 23 years, from Dhaka’s Mirpur.
Biplob, 50, who was convicted of killing a man in Manikganj, was arrested on Thursday evening.
RAB-4 Company Commander Mohammad Arif Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
In July 1999, Biplob and his accomplices attacked the house of one Motaleb Hossain in Manikganj due to political vendetta.
However, when they saw that Motaleb was not home, they attacked Kabul Khan, who lived opposite Motaleb.
They stabbed him with sharp weapons and left him fatally injured.
Locals rescued Kabul and took him to Manikganj Sadar Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.
The next day, Motaleb Hossain filed a murder case against 28-30 people including Biplob after which he and his accomplices went into hiding.
Biplob changed his name to Shaheed and fled to Dhaka to avoid arrest.
While he was on the run, he worked odd jobs and eventually as a middleman for the Department of Environment, and Agargaon Passport Office.
After investigating the case, police charged 13 people including Biplob, Monir Chowdhury, Mosharraf Hossain, Sunil, Ujjal and Shaheed.
On August 7, 2009, the Manikganj Sessions Judge Court gave death penalty to Biplob and Monir. Mosharraf, Sunil, Ujjal and Shaheed were given life sentences and the rest were acquitted.
