Police have arrested a man over the death of a Sylhet college student who committed suicide two months ago for being blackmailed.
Shyamol Das, 21, was arrested from the Jalalabad Residential area on Thursday.
He was then taken to Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 where he provided a confessional statement in front of a judge.
Sylhet’s Shahporan Police OC Syed Anisul Haque told Bangla Tribune that he was arrested in a case of abetting suicide filed by the victim’s father.
The hanging dead body of Sriti Rani, 20, a first-year student of MC College, was found in the fourth four ceiling of the girls hostel on May 25.
She killed herself after Shyamol allegedly threatened her with releasing her private photos online if she did not pay him.
According to court sources, Shyamol hacked into her Facebook messenger and took her private photos which he was using to blackmail for money.
Before her death, he took Tk2,500 from her which she had sent through Bkash. Police were able to track down Shyamol based on that transaction.
