Road crashes claim 27 lives in Bangladesh

At least 44 people were injured

At least 27 people were killed and 44 others injured in nine separate road accidents in Habiganj, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Sirajganj, Jhenaidah, Gazipur, Brahmanbaria, Dhaka, Bogra, and Tangail on Saturday.

In Habiganj, three people were killed and two injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Saturday.

The accident took place at Rustampur Toll Plaza area around 5pm, Sherpur Highway police Officer-in-Charge Parimal Dev confirmed to Bangla Tribune.

The deceased were identified as Bakul Begum, 62, local Chhatra Dal leader Ehia Chowdhury Javed, 24, and autorickshaw driver Rabban Mia, 40.

According to witnesses, the victims were going to see a sick relative in Shatak village of Ghaznaipur union in a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw. 

As soon as it reached Rustompur toll plaza on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, a Sylhet-bound Mitali Paribahan bus overtaking another vehicle collided head-on with the autorickshaw, leaving three dead on spot

The injured were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

In Mymensingh, three persons of a family have been killed after a truck ran over them in front of Khan Diagnostic Center on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Trishal on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as child Sanjida, wife Ratna Begum and husband Jahangir Alam.

Confirming the matter, Moin Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Trishal Police Station said a Mymensingh-bound truck hit them while crossing the road. They died on the spot.

In Rajshahi, a policeman was killed and his wife got injured after being hit by a bus at Shakoa village of Mohanpur upazila around 11:30am on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Jewel Hossain, 31, son of Mohidur Rahman of Kurkuti village of Tetulia union of Manda upazila of Naogaon. He was working as a constable in Bogra’s Adamdighi Police Station.

Touhidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohanpur Police Station, said the body was recovered from the spot and sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The bus has been seized and brought to the police station.

However, the driver escaped. Efforts are underway to arrest him.

In Sirajganj, three people were killed and 10 more were injured in a bus-truck head-on collision in Khalkola Bazar area on the Hatikumrul-Banpara highway.

Confirming the matter, Lutfar Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatikumrul Highway police station said law enforces rescued the victims and sent them to the nearest hospital. 

The identity of the victims could not be known immediately. 

In Jhenaidah, a farmer was killed and six others were injured after a truck lost control and hit them in Kaliganj upazila around 7am on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Lokman Hossain, 80, son of late Rustam Biswas of Khosalpur village of the upazila.

Kaliganj Highway Police OC Sheikh Mezbah Uddin said Lokman was rescued and taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

The injured have been admitted to Jessore General Hospital.

In Gazipur, a man was killed, and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a human hauler and truck in the district’s Pubail area.

The deceased has been identified asMoniruzzaman Monir, 38, said Pubail police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohidul Islam. 

He said a Sylhet-bound stone-laden truck hit the human hauler, killing Monir on the spot.

On the other hand, another person, Ibrahim Hossain, 33, was killed in a collision between two CNG-run autorickshaws at around 10am.

The incident was reported from the Shukundirbag area.

In Brahmanbaria, two people were killed and four others injured on the Comilla-Sylhet highway.

The deceased have been identified as the CNG driver Md Chan Mia, 50, and Billal Mia,45 son of Abdu Mia of Khadera Union of Kasba Upazila of the district, reports BSS.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khantihata Highway police station Sukhendra Basu said a Comilla-bound microbus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction at around 12pm, leaving six persons injured.

Later, the injured were rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria 250-bed District Hospital, but two of them succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, the OC added.

In Dhaka, a man was killed after a bus hit a rickshaw he was on in the Karwan Bazar area. 

The incident took place at around 3:45am, reports Bangla Tribune.

The deceased have been identified as Md Ibrahim Biswas, 24.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Shahbag police station Md Sahabuddin said a speeding bus hit a rickshaw, injuring both the rickshaw puller and Ibrahim.

They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared Ibrahim dead, he added. 

The bus managed to flee from the spot. 

In Bogra, at least four people were killed and one injured in a head-on collision between a private car and pickup van.

The incident took place at around 8:30am on the Bogra-Naogaon road of the district’s Kahaloo upazila. 

One of the deceased has been identified as Abdur Rahman, 35, and information about the other victim could not be known immediately, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ambar Hossain of Kahaloo police station. 

The OC said the Bogra-bound car was hit by a pickup van, killing three and injuring two people on the spot. 

Locals rushed them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced Rahman dead.

The injured victim of the road crash, Shakil, 20, is in critical condition, the officer added.

In Tangail, three people were killed, and two others were injured after they were hit by a bus while crossing the Dhaka-Tangail Highway. 

The incident was reported around noon, locals reported.

The deceased have been identified as Parvin Akhter, 27, her daughter Sadia, 9, and son Shumon 7. 

Locals rushed them to Tangail General Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead upon arrival. 

Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Lutfar Rahman said: “The road accident victims died before they could be brought to the hospital.”

Meanwhile, at least four people were killed and another 10 were injured in a collision between a bus and a sand-laden truck on the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Saturday.

The names of the deceased could not be known immediately. All of them were men.

The accident also momentarily brought traffic movement on the lane towards Dhaka to a standstill.

Mirzapur police later moved the bus with a wrecker and restored the movement of vehicles on the road.

Gorai highway police station OC Molla Tutul said the bus had rammed into the parked truck from behind, leaving three people on the bus dead on the spot.

The injured had been taken to an area hospital, where another person had succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, the police officer added.
