Heavy rains and downpours are causing Jamuna and Bangali rivers to flow over the danger level in Sariakandi, Sonatala and Dhunat upazilas in Bogra.
Mahbubur Rahman, executive engineer of the Bogra Water Development Board, said the water of Jamuna flowed at Mathurapara point in Sariakandi on Wednesday morning at 64cm above the danger level and 5cm at Bangali.
However, the water level in the Jamuna river became stable in the afternoon.
As many as 78,000 people have been stranded as floodwaters inundated riverbanks.
They are in crisis for food, clean water and cattle feed. Many are fleeing to safety with what they have. Some are forced to live indoors or on high ground.
Sub-Divisional Engineer Abdur Rahman said about seven kilometres of embankment in Kamalpur union is at risk. “More surveillance is going on in these areas.”
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Golam Kibria said 78,448 people in 11 unions of three upazilas were stranded in the flood waters.
“A total of 21 tubewells have been installed in these upazilas and 30,000 water purification tablets have been reached. So far, 45 metric tons of GR rice and dry food worth Tk10 lakh have been allocated,” he added.
Golam Kibria further said that 32 medical and five veterinary medical teams have been formed in the affected areas.
