Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed to take necessary steps to save electricity and energy in the current situation of rising global energy prices.
As a result, according to the provisions of section 114 of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, it has been decided to close shops, shopping malls, markets and stalls after 8pm from Monday.
A meeting with businessmen of Khulna district in this regard was held in the conference room of Khulna District Commissioner on Monday afternoon.
Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque attended the meeting as chief guest.
He said: “Loading and unloading of perishable goods at the wholesale yard after 8pm is allowed but not selling products,” adding that pharmacy and restaurants will remain open.
Addressing the shop owners, he said the wages of the workers should not be deducted as the shops would close at 8pm.
The meeting said that according to sub-section 3 of section 114 of the labour law of Bangladesh, no shop can be kept open after 8pm.
However, stores selling medicine, medical supplies, food items as well as docks, jetties, stations, airports and transport service terminals may be kept open. Stores for funerals, newspapers, retail outlets for light snacks as well as petrol pumps, sewerage or sanitation, and any electricity and water supply industry can be kept open.
