Dams and roads in two upazilas of Tangail have collapsed, flooding low-lying areas of about 20 villages.
On Sunday, the dam in Analiyabari area of Kalihati upazila and the road in Balia Uttarpara area in Basail upazila collapsed.
According to the locals, water has been flowing over the road in Balina Uttarpara area of Basail upazila’s Andhirapara-Balina road for the last two days. Later, due to strong currents, the road collapsed.
At the same time, three other roads at Andhirapara also collapsed.
Mohammad Solaiman, headmaster of Balina Dakhil Madrasa in Basail upazila, said the road was broken in four places. As a result, there was no movement on the road. Ordinary people including students are in extreme misery, he added.
Saiful Islam, councillor of ward 5 of the municipality, said: “The road is damaged in four places. Water has infiltrated through the road and submerged low-lying areas in eight villages including Balina, Adajan, Bhorpara, Andhirapara and Kanchanpur. Now people there have to travel by boat.”
Meanwhile, the dam broke in Analiabari area of Kalihati upazila. As a result, traffic through the dam is closed at present.
Abdul Alim, chairman of Salla union parishad, said: “The dam has collapsed due to excess water pressure. Due to this, low-lying areas of 10 to 12 villages including Analiabari, Bhawal, Nardai, Goria, Habla, Deolabari of the upazila have been flooded. It also broke down here last year.”
On the other hand, water levels in various rivers including Jamuna, Dhaleshwari, Jhenai, Bangshai and Lohajang continue to rise. As a result, low-lying areas of 12 upazilas of the district are flooded.
Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, said the flood situation was deteriorating. New lowlands are being flooded. River erosion has also occurred in some areas.
He said that work is being done in this regard where necessary.
In this regard, Deputy Commissioner Ataul Gani said, there is a large amount of relief materials. Upazila nirbahi officers have been instructed to assist the flood victims.
